If you see "hardware drivers" instead of "restricted driver manager" you're probably using 9.10. I have no idea how applicable these instructions are to 9.10, but I suspect not very.

Thanks. I'm pullin' my hair out here. I love Ubuntu but this wireless thing's kickin' my butt. I can't find a "restricted driver manager"; all I can find is "hardware drivers" under system, administration. I cannot disable/enable, all I can see is the 'activate' button, which does nothing. The b43-fwcutter package was downloaded and installed correctly and the system rebooted. No wifi. Any suggestions would be better than Hair Club for Men. My DVD doesn't play movies either. Do I need to "run" bfcutter, if so, what is the command to do that?

Thanks!

edogawaconan: I used bash because the 'cost' (ie, time taken installing the package) is minor and I much prefer the dialect. zfs will only become suitable when (ha!) our production environment moves to zfs as well, it would be far too big of a difference before then.

Michael: interesting tool, thanks for the link! I had a quick flick through your writeup and will poke the tool more later. As I understand it, it's sort of an OS-aware rsync-like tool, so there's no support for running arbitrary commands on the client as part of the deploy process?

Interesting traditional approach -- I'll plug my personal approach to a similar problem: radmind (<a href="http://sourceforge.net/projects/radmind/" rel="nofollow">http://sourceforge.net/projects/radmind/</a>).

We use this at my site to manage deployment and patching of the production environment, and when a dev environment is needed we install a skeletonized OS (FreeBSD + the radmind package), point it at the radmind server and let it deploy as it would in production.

When developers make changes we can then run the radmind fsdiff tool and determine exactly what needs to be updated in production. If they reach a point where their system is unusable they can re-apply the production loadset and get back to an exact copy of our production environment.

Something from your procedure above that I'm missing is the "rechristen" script to eliminate the need to edit rc.conf and friends (which I intend to steal now).

My notes on deploying radmind along with some example scripts for the interested: http://www.bsd-box.net/~mikeg/blog/index.php?serendipity%5Baction%5D=search&serendipity%5BsearchTerm%5D=radmind&serendipity%5BsearchButton%5D=%3E

I use konsole with colinux and it works perfectly, The only problem is having to waste a minimum of 300-500mb just to run it and the one you mention, the colinux TAP interface automatically sets itself as the default gateway when enabled. This can be fixed with this command:
iproute delete 0.0.0.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 guest-os-ip
But I haven't found a way to do it automatically on startup. It would be seamless if not because of this problem. Anyway I keep searching for a more efficient solution, in KDE for windows I haven't found the package wich contains Konsole, that coupled with cygwin would be nice indeed.

Hey guys, got it for the Realtek HD drivers! Just pick the same drivers you were using on Vista but this time, right click on installer file and in Properties->Compatibility, select to run on compatibility mode for Windows Vista, and voila!

Have fun, Windows 7 rocks!

i also had very high system usage, after installing win7 64bit on my vostro 1310.
installing dell's chipset driver updates solved the problem
as mentioned before, vostro 1320 touchpad driver works fine

i also noticed a drop in battery capacity! (- ~30min!)
don't know how to solve this problem??

Hey guys, don't worry. I also have a Vostro 1310 running Win7 Ultimate and was worried about touchpad drivers since updating with Windows ended up installing Synaptics drivers. Just install the Dell Touchpad driver for Vostro 1320 (new model replacing Vostro 1310)from Dell Support site, choosing Win 7 as OS. Works like a charm! Still looking for Realtek HD Audio driver though...

Windows 7 is not compatible with Dell Vostro 1x20s. Please see the TechNet thread below about touchpad failures under windows 7:
The Mighty Mouse does not report whether the right and left sensor is activated simultaneously. In fact, it reports a right-click only when there is no finger contact on the left side of the mouse. This means that the Mighty Mouse cannot support mouse chording, used by CAD software, games, and other applications where multiple functions are mapped to the mouse.

Find a better media player :). I'd suggest the <a href="http://www.cccp-project.net" rel="nofollow">Combined Community Codec Pack</a>, which includes a very lightweight and simple player.

Hey Alex,

I think we need video drivers. Because system usage goes insanely to 75% on playing video. But I could not find video drivers anywhere. Any thoughts?

thanks and cheers,

Well, if you enable SSID broadcast can you connect? Given there's no security benefit to hiding the SSID I'd just recommend you re-enable it anyway.

I have done the above - but still cannot access our Cisco Aironet 1240AG Series Access Point. All other Access points work 100%. Only possible difference is that the Cisco does not broadcast the ssid (Hidden). I tried the "connect to hidden" but to no avail. On windows it works. Any ideas?
