Broadcom BCM4328 wifi on Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty

May 12th, 2009

Ubuntu now includes support for this wireless chip in its ‘Restricted Driver Manager’. Sadly the activation silently fails on a fresh install of Ubuntu. The solution? Install b43-fwcutter. Then disable and re-enable the driver in Ubuntu’s Restricted Driver Manager and it will work after a restart.

I have done the above – but still cannot access our Cisco Aironet 1240AG Series Access Point. All other Access points work 100%. Only possible difference is that the Cisco does not broadcast the ssid (Hidden). I tried the “connect to hidden” but to no avail. On windows it works. Any ideas?

Well, if you enable SSID broadcast can you connect? Given there’s no security benefit to hiding the SSID I’d just recommend you re-enable it anyway.

Thanks. I’m pullin’ my hair out here. I love Ubuntu but this wireless thing’s kickin’ my butt. I can’t find a “restricted driver manager”; all I can find is “hardware drivers” under system, administration. I cannot disable/enable, all I can see is the ‘activate’ button, which does nothing. The b43-fwcutter package was downloaded and installed correctly and the system rebooted. No wifi. Any suggestions would be better than Hair Club for Men. My DVD doesn’t play movies either. Do I need to “run” bfcutter, if so, what is the command to do that?

    Thanks!

If you see “hardware drivers” instead of “restricted driver manager” you’re probably using 9.10. I have no idea how applicable these instructions are to 9.10, but I suspect not very.
